Most reloading software is built for a desk. Big tables, dense forms, a mouse and a keyboard. That's fine for the night before a range day, when you're working up loads at the bench. It falls apart the moment you're standing behind a rifle with the sun in your eyes and a 12 mph crosswind nudging your spotting scope.

That's the gap I kept running into, and it's the reason LoadOut's Range Day tools exist. The whole design brief was one sentence: you should be able to log a shot, read your data, and get back behind the rifle without thinking about the app. Here's how that shook out in practice.

A shot is a tap, not a form

The core interaction is shot-by-shot capture, and it has to be fast. When you're shooting a group, you don't want to type. You want to log the shot and call the next one. So capture is built around a tap: on the Log Shots surface you tap the target face where the round landed, and the dot and the running group centre draw on the face as you go. Long-press a dot to correct it. When you want the paper itself on record, Group Analysis works from a photograph — mark the holes on the picture and it does the geometry — so the image stays with the numbers instead of in a camera roll you'll never reconcile later.

Let the sensors do the typing

The best field UX is the one where you don't enter anything at all. Your phone already knows things, so we use them. The inclinometer reads your shooting angle straight off the accelerometer. No protractor, no guessing whether you're shooting 15 or 20 degrees uphill at that elk. Point the phone, read the angle, log it.

Same logic applies to your gear. Over Bluetooth, LoadOut reads three devices: a Kestrel 5-series meter, a WeatherFlow WEATHERmeter, and the Shooters Global SG Timer. Pair a meter and your conditions pull in instead of getting hand-keyed off a tiny screen in the wind; pair the timer and every split arrives at the timer's own millisecond times. A Garmin Xero C1 Pro comes across a different way — export the session as a .fit file from Garmin Connect, or photograph the screen and let the app read it — and the per-shot velocities land in the record without being retyped. Every number a device can report is a number you don't have to fat-finger with cold hands. Meter, timer, and Xero capture are Pro; typing the numbers in yourself is always free.

Capturing the stuff you'd otherwise forget

Beyond the shot itself, you can capture your scope adjustments and let the app run the group analysis for you, extreme spread and mean radius. Those are the numbers that actually tell you whether a load is working, and they're tedious to compute by hand at the bench. Logging conditions alongside them means that three weeks from now, when a load shoots differently, you have the context to know why instead of a shrug.

Reading is half the problem. You glance at a phone in bright light for maybe a second before your eye goes back to the optic. Scope View is built for that glance: it draws what you'd see through the optic — your reticle to scale inside a round field of view, the target at its true angular size for the range and magnification you set — so you read the hold off the reticle's tree instead of parsing a wall of numbers. The Stylized view, all 50+ reticles, and target selection are free; the Scenic photo backdrops are Pro, and free users still see them live under a soft blur rather than behind a lock.

And honestly, sometimes you don't want to pick up the phone at all. That's what the Apple Watch, Wear OS, and Garmin companions are for — three native apps, each running with the phone in a bag. Glanceable data on your wrist, so a flick of the arm tells you what you need without breaking position, and a shot logged there queues until the phone confirms it. It's a small thing that turns out to matter a lot when you're prone and committed to a shot.

A few principles held all of this together. Fewer taps beat more taps. A sensor reading beats a typed one. A glance beats a study. And because LoadOut is local-first with no tracking, that range data sits in the app's own storage on your device, and no LoadOut server ever receives it — we don't operate one that could. The only cloud copy is one you choose to make: Cloud Backup and Cloud Sync are Pro, encrypted on your device with a passphrase we never see, and written to your own iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or OneDrive. A free JSON export is always there too. It's yours, captured fast, kept close.
